Update: So, yes, the FTC has filed an injunction in an attempt to temporarily halt Microsoft's $69 billion buyout of Activision Blizzard — and the trillion dollar titan has welcomed it. The thinking here, allegedly, is that the Redmond firm is playing 4D chess, and it believes that by taking this to court earlier than expected it's actually going to accelerate the eventual conclusion. Which is, of course, that it ultimately gets what it wants.
Original Article: The USA’s antitrust department the Federal Trade Commission is allegedly planning an injunction which it hopes will temporarily halt Microsoft’s long-running attempted acquisition of Activision Blizzard. You may recall that the FTC moved to block the deal last year, with a hearing due on 2nd August, after the merger’s 18th July deadline expires. Now, the division is seeking an injunction with a US District Court to prevent the deal from closing prior to the aforementioned hearing.
Microsoft, of course, already has its work cut out trying to turn around a decision from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, which elected to block the deal back in April. The Redmond firm will appeal that decision starting 24th July, but even if its case is successful, the ruling will still need to return to the CMA for a second review. So, despite being approved in most other countries, the buyout remains strangled by some pretty strong red tape – it’ll be interesting to see if the firm’s well-compensated legal team can ultimately untangle it all.

We've heard nothing about this deal for a long time now and it was great, but you had to go and ruin it 🤣
The US knows how successful Starfield is going to be and said 'We have to save Sony'
Microsoft looking to close it in the next few weeks then. Be interesting to see if the FTC get the PI given some of their argument is very weak.
I think they will find a way of getting it through the UK in some form.
If I understand correctly, and I probably don’t, the idea here is that the injunction would be long enough to prevent MS from closing the deal prior to the deal’s expiration dated. Meaning that if MS try to close without the CMA’s approval, this injunction would block it and cause the deal to expire at which point MS would have to pay ABK the $3B. MS could then either drop the deal or choose to start the process over again.
@Triumph741 Save them from the majesty of 30fps.
Brought to you by the worlds most powerful console™
The deal will pass when both sides agree to the terms they want. The EU showed how easy that could be and MS worked with them as they would like to do with the FTC and CMA. The CMA should be studying a math book at the moment so the Judge don’t laugh at them again. Seriously it’s on tape, watch it. The CMA looked really bad in court and not sure they want that again, but i am here to watch it if so. You thought the acting in the Twisted Metal trailer was bad, you should watch the CMA answer questions in court.
Still think this is just delaying the inevitable.
It was nice going 2-3 weeks without hearing about this tiring saga but of course happiness can't last for too long or else 🥲
I want MS to lose but honestly i don't give a sh*t anymore, its boring and tiresome doing Corp Wars.
@Shstrick Yes, the injunction is aiming to prevent the deal from closing prior to the August hearing.
2 weeks time and it should be alot clearer what is going to happen. They will get a 2 week temporary order
This is the states we are talking so Microsoft can just bribe the FTC. The state of corruption in my country right there folks.
I will never buy their games anyway.
I hate their rated M stuffs.
This injunction will very likely be granted. There is no point on legal procedures if the deal is allowed to go through.
I don't think they will be able to win the legal cases, though.
@Shstrick
Nah. The injunction does prevent closing before that date, but ABK and MS area already likely discussing extending the deadline.
Deadline extensions on deals like this are common but do tend to come with increased payouts should the deal fall through, but I'm sure neither party expects that to happen. Expect something along the lines of a 6 or 12 month extension along with an increased fall-through penalty of 4 or 5 billion.
The process does not need to be restarted when the injunction is granted, injunctions tend to simply prevent things that are being fought in court from happening while the case is still being argued.
Additionally: the hearing is with FTC's internal court. That court does not really have that much power. If they agree with MS, the FTC heads can actually override it, but at the same time, that resolution does not stop the acquisition. They would have to sue in actual federal court and win there, and then go through a long chain of appeals all the way to the supreme court to be able to stop the deal.
It's highly unlikely that a second injunction would be granted if the FTC internal courts side with MS, though.
Edited for clarity.
I wonder how many secret meetings the ftc has had with the CMA about this, the ftcs whole arguement was cod not being on other consoles wonder what they gonna use now
@Green-Bandit because they know they are wrong they messed their numbers up again! And to quote the CMA "most people who join gamepass do so for cloud gaming" lol all 5000 of them
God Bless America

Oh god this again.
@Toot1st they really looked bad in court. I have a PS5 and Series X so this deal won’t help or hurt me. I am just following it as I follow all the other major headlines but the CMA was so wrong that they were scared to answer much of what the MS lawyers were asking. Even the Judge had to get on them some. Then to top it all off wanted until October for the next hearing, the Judge was like NO. That is not a good looking for CMA, which allowed major networks and TV shows to be all locked up under their noses, yet fight this case hard with fudged numbers.
Always a laugh reading the 'i'm sick of reading about this' comments. Seems a lot of people out there are being held hostage and forced to read things by their captors.
Good! Thank you, FTC (and CMA).
The CMA is the only other regulator so far that got it right. The other regulators are fine letting Microsoft buy their way to dominance in yet another industry because they can't see past empty ten-year deals.
@Intr1n5ic It might also be the most powerful game

Xbox? Who gives a $%^!? I have 20 gaming friends and exactly two own an MS console. As far as I'm concerned, they haven't been relevant for five or six years. MS could own the whole damned world and they wouldn't do anything particularly exciting with it. So... again... WHO CARES?
@PlayStationGamer3919 That's for sure! And that's sort of my point. Polishing giant turds isn't going to do anything for you. Microsoft is never going to buy themselves to dominance. They can barely buy themselves to an exciting exclusive. Not since Xbox 360 have they really been totally focused on VIDEO GAMING. I don't know even what in the hell they're focused on anymore. Suffice to say, they're NOT focused, which is why they're not going to win the console wars. At least not any time soon. The tides shifted to Sony and Nintendo a long time ago. And anybody hung up on MS is probably a PC gamer, anyway.
I'd be fine if they buy activision alone. Take cod.
I like diablo 4 lol. Don't take blizzard.
In all honesty taking games from other platforms forever is a bad idea. Timed exclusives are fine. It really doesn't force me to buy another console.
The deal will close either with or without the FTC and CMA, they will just pay the fines and move on. Obvs it looks better on them if they don't brute force their way through and the legal route while long winded is the most civil way.
I don't really play activision/blizzard games, and I own an Xbox and PS5 like a lot of people so I am not really bothered about if it goes through or not.
@Imani you mean just like Sony? Stop with the nonsense. Ok for your blue Sony, but not anyone else. No “cultivating studios” in your responding comment.
I honestly can't wait for this whole ordeal to be over so I know whether or not to buy the Diablo Bundle the next time it goes on sale.
I really do not understand everyone on here wanting this deal to go thru. Guess you all be happy with just Sony own games since you are all ok with Microsoft buying all the developers. Everyone complains about Comcast all the while we use to have many cable/internet companies but they all got bought up to now we only have Comcast in most areas. Guess Americans do not like choice and like to be forced with no options.
@Intr1n5ic handy camp by it brother weakness.. Xbox S is going to cripple game's this generation.
@Tasuki Will you pack it in with your hatred of Jim Ryan. Your constantly having a go at a guy who's only protecting the interests of his employers I.E. doing his job.
@TheShrunkenHeadsman Good grief man get ahold of yourself.
The way Microsoft is acting is embarrassing. I guess we can expect more politically charged statements from them soon.
@Triumph741 u do know starfield's success won't even effect sony so your statement about trying save sony is incorrect infact more like starfield's will help force sony to step up knowing they finally have competition
@Falkirk4life Stepping up is not as easy as pressing a button. IF they have invested so much into live service games and there is little to no hype for them (the same goes for Suicide Squad) they might have a disappointing 5 year stretch only propped up by Wolverine, Ghost Of Tsushima 2 and a few others. I don't expect a new release from Naughty Dog any time soon seeing as how the majority of their workforce was slaving away at MP Last of Us that only 5 people care about.

@Intr1n5ic What a very childish comment.
@TheCollector316 90% of sonys studios was also bought they been doing it since the 90's
@Nem LOL what that they are doing is embarrassing ? What they said is correct, its welcomed as it will bring this to an end quicker.
@RustyBullet Lol No. It's embarrassing they are trying to use political speech to over come a decision that is correct cause they can't argue otherwise. Anyone can see their attempt at monopolising the game streaming market.
They could end it right now by stopping the attempts at a ridiculous buyout that is just disrupting the market at large with competition buyouts.
I will add it's also embarrassing to see some defending a company known to have engaged in monopolistic practices in the past and trying to do it again. Talk about not learning.
This will take away consumer choices and get you price gouged. I would hope all could understand that by looking at something like Windows and office that are ridiculously overpriced and you are forced to upgrade into, but i doubt it. Easier to just buy into corporate bs now and pay up later, i guess. 🤷
